Basic rules for writing good descriptions :

1.  Answer all Questions:

The descriptions of your goods should answer any and all questions that a potential shopper may have about your products.  You need to cover all the topics that a potential buyer is interested in :
What does the item look like ?
What size or shape is the item ?
What is the item used for ?
What colors and sizes are available if you can offer variations ?
What is the price ?
How will you ship the item ?
How will you pack the item for shipping ?

2.  Use Good Adjectives:

You need to go back to high school English and sharpen up on your use of colorful descriptions and adjectives.  Make whatever item you are selling Sound Really Great.  If you are selling children’s clothing use words like Adorable, Precious, Perfect, Colorful, Pretty, Cute…because those are the words that Moms and Kids use when they talk about such things, right ?   If you are selling Men’s Hats, you need to use words like Masculine, Manly, Rugged, Handsome, Nautical, Woodsy, Rough, etc…the words that men like…and the words that would be flattering to men.

3.  Use Sales Words

Don’t be afraid to pile on some B.S. and use sugary sales talk when describing your items.   You can call items “A Must Have”…or “Perfect for the Holidays”…or “Now Reduced Price for Immediate Sale”…or “Clearance Sale”.   You can use descriptions like “Limited Number” …or “Rare Vintage” to describe things as rare and hard to find.

4.  Describe the Techniques Used 

People really like the fact that items are unique and hand-made items.  Etsy deals in one-of-a-kind items that are custom made by artists and craftspeople.  So, you need to tell people exactly how your items are crafted, and they will want your items even more !   If you are making Stuffed Animals, then describe the fabric, the stuffing, how you sewed the features of the animals etc.  Talk about the stitch techniques and what models or inspirations brought you to making that particular animal.  If you are painting, then describe the canvas type, the brushes you are using, and the exact types of paints you are using.  Talk about the brush techniques and the reason you used them.  Talk about the artists that inspired you.

5.  Don’t Make Descriptions Too Long or Scattered.

Okay, so now you know how to make the descriptions long right ?  Well, don’t make them too long.  You’ll lose peoples’ interest.  Make sure you put all the basic descriptive stuff in the beginning…and you can even use Bullet Points in the first paragraph to highlight the important points about pricing, shipping, sizing, colors etc.    In the later paragraphs you can write the longer sentences that talk about the finer points of your items.   Bring some structure into how you write your descriptions.

Write descriptions that help a reader make a decision about buying:

1. Include dimensions and which way they are given.
Across, down and deep is a good order. If the purse tapers, say that. Purses that are much wider at the bottom than at the top make it hard to take things out.

2. Don’t use words that those of us who aren’t functional crafters don’t know.
“Popper,” “drop,” “slip pocket” are familiar terms to you, but not necessarily to your clients.

3. Tell us the material.
If there are many materials, tell us what is where. “Made of leather, pleather, naugahyde, cordura and brass” isn’t nearly as useful as “Leather on the outside, lined with canvas and brass rings on the straps.”

4. Keep the description short and use lots of verbs.

5. Link the characteristics of the piece (features) with how the client can use it (benefits).
Saying, “the straps are really long” is not as effective as “You can hang the purse over your shoulder or wear it across your chest to keep your hands free.” That helps browsers visualize themselves carrying the purse.

Using clear photographs with simple descriptions will help you sell more of your work quickly.
